Event Information

Description

Join us on September 24th at 1pm for a group paddle, or “flotilla,” alongside a Ho-Chunk dugout canoe! Participants will take to the water in Hoofers canoes or their own watercraft and follow Bill “Na?a?wa?cekg?ize” Quackenbush, tribal historic preservation officer of the Ho-Chunk Nation, as he paddles a 45-minute circuit on Lake Mendota in a Ho-Chunk cottonwood dugout canoe. Participation will be free.

A limited number of Hoofers canoes will be available for paddlers to use free of charge. This event is first come, first served– but if we run out, participants are welcome to bring their personal watercraft to join the flotilla out on the water.

Participants will gather in front of the Hoofer Outing Club boathouse at 1pm before beginning the paddle. Please be sure to bring a water bottle and comfortable attire suitable for on-the-water activities!

This event is a part of OUR SHARED WATERS, a multidisciplinary program centering Native craft and knowledge about water, food, language, and ecology. The flotilla will be preceded by a public talk, “Tee Waksikhominak Canoe Conundrum,” by Bill “Na?a?wa?cekg?ize” Quackenbush and Amy Rosebrough, state archaeologist, at the outdoor classroom in Alumni Park at 12pm– we invite you to attend to learn more about Ho-Chunk dugout canoes before the flotilla!
